Dermal Fillers help replace volume loss as we age

As the body ages, the subcutaneous fat that gave our features definition (in our youth) diminishes, and without that support, facial features can begin to sag. Dermal fillers can take the place of subcutaneous fat to help reduce those signs of aging by lifting and supporting the skin and replace lost volume to help smooth wrinkles, plump the lips, and restore a more youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines and soften creases, or enhance facial contours. This is an amazing rejuvenation treatment that is cost-effective and requires no surgery or downtime.

What are fillers made with?

There are a variety of FDA approved filler products that are used throughout the medical aesthetic industry. Dermal fillers are categorized by the substance that they are made from. At Rytualist, we use 2 categories of filler products.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already found in your skin. It helps keep skin plump and hydrated. HA fillers are typically soft and gel-like. The results are temporary, lasting 6 to 12 months or longer before the body gradually and naturally absorbs the particles. Most HA fillers are infused with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during and after treatment. FDA HA fillers that we carry are:

1. Restylane Lyft, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Contour (facial contouring)
2. Revanesse Versa (lips)
3. Belotero (tear troughs)

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Calcium hydroxylapatite is also a naturally occurring substance, found primarily in our bones. When used in a filler, the calcium particles are nearly microscopic and suspended in a smooth gel. The consistency of a CaHA filler is typically thicker than that of a hyaluronic acid filler and typically lasts longer as well, about 12 months for most patients. Calcium hydroxylapatite is also reported to help stimulate natural collagen production, and it is typically used for deeper lines and wrinkles.

  • Are dermal fillers safe? There is some degree of risks with any cosmetic treatment however dermal fillers are widely considered safe. They are FDA approved and widely used as a non-invasive alternative to plastic surgery. During your initial consultation we will discuss the safety of the different types of dermal fillers and decide which will work best for you.

  • What is the typical recovery process after receiving dermal fillers? Typically the recovery is very easy and you will not need to plan for downtime following your treatment.

  • What are the side effects of dermal fillers? The most common side effects are mild and include tenderness and redness around the injection site, along with mild bruising and swelling. These effects should subside anywhere from 48 hours to 7 days.

  • When will I see results with my dermal filler treatment? Depending on the filler used, most see results immediately following the procedure. More long lasting results occur after the filler has a chance to merge with the tissue, which can take up to a month.

  • What’s the difference between dermal filler and botox? Both are medical injectable treatment, however they vary in the conditions they treat. Dermal fillers are substances that fill the areas beneath the skin while stimulating collagen production, whereas botox treats fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles that affect the movement of the skin.
